I've been playing this game for a few months now but I'm humbly stumbling upon the following situation... Ever since I started playing this game I've only bred ONE rare dragon (the Chinese dragon). Unfortunately I do not recall what dragons I used in the breeding process... However, ever since I've bred this dragon I've been busy with breeding hybrid dragons as in:
Chinese dragon and Fruit dragon.
I hope to get a Rare dragon this way but I haven't received a single extra rare dragon. Ofcourse my dragons are having the correct perks. I'm getting to a point where I think that it's impossible to get a rare dragon if you breed a rare dragon with a hybrid or hybrid and hybrid. Are there any restrictions to this for getting rare dragons?
For instance: Are you unable to get a rare dragon if you breed a hybrid hybrid / hybrid rare?
Do you MUST use a single element hybrid in order to get a rare dragon? Could you please give me some information about this because I don't want to keep on playing if I'm unable to get Rare dragons because I'm doing something wrong...
Looking forward to hear your experience on breeding rare dragons!
Thank you for this awesome website.
I just received a reply from the creators of the game...

Dear Jorrit!
Thank you for your valuable feedback! We appreciate your interest in our game!
This is a permanent game feature that there are no exact schemes on which dragons give a certain dragon type after breeding. The result of breeding is random and it does not depend on which dragons are chosen for breeding.
In case you have any questions concerning the game, please, let us know.
Best regards,

I upgraded my Fruit dragon to level 15 and he has 20% extra chance for breeding a rare dragon! What the ****???? Aren't they supposed to have max 3 stars? This game is freaking me out...
Hi Jorrit! That is a pretty "open" reply! I was doing the same thing as you, and at level 19 I still have NOT gotten a Chinese dragon yet!! :) haha I have found that when I breed a hybrid with a single element dragon, that's when I do get the rare dragons (though they are few and far in between). I have never gotten a rare dragon when breeding double hybrids or hybrids and rares. I had been assuming that you couldn't get a rare dragon unless you bred with a single element, but maybe that's just how my luck has been running! Interesting! Good luck!!
Yes, I was surprised, too, to find that I could get more stars every 3 levels after evolving! My flower dragon now has 4 stars for rare breeding!! :)
Jorrit, their answer sound like you can breed any element with any element and still get a different, which I believe is a wrong interpretation. I think in order, for example, to breed a Steam Dragon (rare fire/water) you need 2 dragons that have between them the elements of water AND fire. Any other element added to these 2 can still generate such steam dragon. For example, joining a fire nature with a water air dragons, you have the possibility to breed a steam dragon.
As for numbers, it is definitely not totally random. If it was completely random, all possibilities would have the same rate of success. I've seen one website that explains more or less the percentage of chances of getting the dragons. I will look for it again and reply here.
"The process of breeding dragons in Dragons World is inherently random, however by understanding how a particular dragon is randomly selected you can sometimes increase your chances of getting a specific dragon. Each breedable dragon in the game has a particular number associated with it called its probability factor. This factor is a number greater than 0 but less than 1. It is the indiviual factors on the rare dragons that are increased by the perk Chance of Rare Dragon. So when breeding a pair of dragons with the max chance for rare dragons of 30%, a factor of .1 would become .13.
When the game calculates the actual result it does so by first determining all possible breedable combinations based on the elements of the parents. Any dragon that shares all of its elements with either one or both of the parents is included. It then determines which of those dragons is rare and increases their probability factor appropriately. Then the sum of all the possible dragon's probability factors is determined. The game then produces a random number between 0 and this sum. The game checks to see which dragon's range of probability the number falls in with an exclusive upper bound and this determines the actual result of the breeding."
This is the theoretical part. For the practical example:
"Example
Say you wanted to determine the chance you have to get a Predatory Dragon when breeding a Fire Dragon and a Grass Dragon. First you would determine all the possible results:
Fire Dragon, Earth Dragon, Nature Dragon, Lava Dragon, Flower Dragon, Fruit Dragon, Grass Dragon, Spring Dragon, Tropical Dragon, Predatory Dragon
Then assuming you have no perks that affect rarity you sum all of the probability factors which in this case would be: 5.100012
Then to determine the chance for a specific dragon you divide that dragon's probability factor by the sum: 0.1 / 5.100012 = ~0.0196
This equates to roughly a 1.96% chance to breed a Predatory Dragon from a Fire Dragon and a Grass Dragon. As you can see, rare dragons are actually pretty rare, so don't be discouraged if you keep breeding but haven't gotten one yet!
Example Modified w/PerkEdit
Now let's go back to the %chance to breed rares perk. In the example above, the only rare dragon in the pot is the Predatory Dragon. Let's assume we have 30% extra chance to breed a rare, which increases the Predatory Dragon's probability factor by 30%, so from 0.1 to 0.13.
This would change the sum of all probability factors in the pot to 5.130012. To determine the chance of getting a Predatory Dragon, we would take its new probability factor and divide it by the new sum: 0.13 / 5.130012 = ~0.0253.
This equates to roughly a 2.53% chance to breed a Predatory Dragon from a Fire Dragon and a Grass Dragon."
So, roughly you get 2 Predatory Dragons every 100 tries. But of course, it's not a rule, you can try 1000 times and never get it (which will hardly happen).
So, the more combinations you have, the harder it is to breed a particular dragon. Than, answering you initial question, breeding hybrids with hybrids or rares with rares/hybrids give much more combinations and then the sum of possibilities or the denominator of the calculation will be much higher; thus, it is much more difficult to breed a rare.
So, keep using single elements together with hybrids that give the least combination. That will make your chances higher. The big problems are the 4-element. They give too many. There you need 2 hybrids or 1 rare 1 single. You got the point.
As a future idea of work, we could try to list the best combination of couples to get a particular rare dragon (those couples that have the least possibilities). I will try to make a chart about it.
For instance, I have made the first scheme of how to get rare dragons easier. Doing that, I noticed that 3-element dragons don't have any easier way of obtaining, since using any kind combination of 3 elements give always the same number of possible dragons. For the 4 element as well, unfortunately.
Then, concentrate on the 2-element rare (opposite elements).
For the steam dragon:
- Fire Earth/Water: Fire Dragon, Earth Dragon, Water Dragon, Lava Dragon, Steam Dragon, River Dragon, Tortoise Dragon and Ferocious Dragon;
- Fire Nature/Water: Fire Dragon, Nature Dragon, Water Dragon, Steam Dragon, Tropical Dragon, Spring Dragon, Flower Dragon, Water Lili Dragon and Coral Dragon;
- Fire Air/Water: Fire Dragon, Water Dragon, Air Dragon, Steam Dragon, Phoenix Dragon, Snow Dragon, Chinese Dragon.
For the first combination, according to the wikia probability factor of each dragon:
- The first combination (Earth) has a 3.1% of chance and 4.0% (with 30% perk) of getting a Steam Dragon;
- The second combination (Nature) has a 2.2% of chance and 2.9% (with 30% perk) of getting a Steam Dragon;
- The third combination (Air) has a 4.1% of chance and 5.4% (with 30% perk) of getting a Steam Dragon.
I will keep going on the combinations with other elements and see what we get!
Thank you SO much for all the effort you put in to this. I've read everything that you put down here and it's now more than clear to me that you are much better off by just breeding SINGLE element / HYBRID in order to get a rare dragon.
It's a bit sad that the game works this way (somewhere it actually makes sence) but still... I would have more fun in this game if I breed rare dragons with hybrids and have the same amount of chance to get rare dragons.
FYI, I had some further mail contact with SocialQuantum (the game developer) and I would like put down the mail conversation I had with them, because it might help you:
My response on their first mail: Thanks for your swift response! Although I do not understand exactly what you mean..
I'll try and rephrase my question: Am I still able to get rare dragons if I breed a hybrid dragon / another Hybrid dragon or am I forced to use a hybrid dragon / a single element dragon?
They responded: please allow me to explain: there is no certain schematics or formula to breed rare types of dragon. It is a random process where a player just needs some luck, there are no restrictions on breeding rare dragons nor there is a certain rule that you need in order to breed a rare dragon. We can simply recommend you to just keep trying, and wishing you lots of luck with the breeding process!
My response: Thank you so much for your explanation! Then I have 2 more questions... I am having a Fruit dragon right now which has 20% chance of breeding a rare dragon! Is this normal or is this a bug?
Is this dragon still suitable for breeding rare dragons?
Their response: thank you for your question. If the game says that you do have chances to breed a rare dragon out of it, then you can breed a rare dragon out of your fruit dragon, of course. Roughly putting it, it's 1 against 5 chances that you'll get a rare dragon after the breeding process is done. Just summon all of your luck! :)
That's how the mail conversation has been. Unfortunately their responses are pretty strange... I get the feeling that they tend to avoid the question or just have no idea of what they are actually saying. I don't get the feeling that they actually play the game haha. Ah well, that's often how it goes with games. I work at a gaming company myself and I don't play the games we facilitate either ^^ I have little knowledge of the insiders/bugs etc... ;) Just have to talk with you guys and share experiences.
Thank you for the response =)
Reading this, it surprises me! Either the Wikia is completely wrong or the developer is not being completely honest. I mean, 1 out of 5 tries to get a rare??? Really? Where are all these rare dragons?
Also, based on their response, it seems that the elements don't matter at all. Which I believe from experience, it is not true at all. You only get an egg of the same elements of the parents.
Now, wikia is always written by people that just loves the topic (being that animes, series, movies, games or whatever) and they spend a lot of time on that. And don't get paid a penny.
Soooo, yeah, I am more willing to trust everyone's experience and research (many times being by hacking the game, reading the code, whatever, which seems to be the source of wikia's info), than to believe that I am so freaking unlucky that I breed 10, 20, 30 dragons and don't get a single rare, even with 20% perk (10 10%).
Dan did a wonderful job of helping to put realistic figures on the breading of dragons and how gtting one is rare indeed. One thing that is not covered is Dragon World is designed to make money first. These kind of games are designed to get you to throw as much money at them as possible. Most people will not wait the time nessesary to gget the rare dragons or wait the time it takes to get through all of the plaaned obsolescence in these type of games. They want you to get impatient and spend, spend, spend. Sadly, I have sent emails feor supportmany times, but I have never received a responce. I had valid complaints about game errors and not receiving my Sparke Dragon, but as far as I can tell, there is no one who gives a damn. That seems to be the chief complaint about this game is the lack of support from the creators. It is too bad because the game is pretty cool and has the ability to be awesome with some attention to their problems. I have been playing this since Christmas and finally a couple of weeks ago I got a rock dragon. WOO HOO! A rare dragon. One out of a hundred fifty tries. The thing I hate the most is all the damn time in the breeding room and then more time in the hatcher and then more and more and more and more time to where it takes days to get a useful dragon. Damn, get rid of some the the absolutely assinine time waisting issues. Even if I had millions to throw at this game I would get board to death waiting and doing nothing. Maybe if y8u fixed the screwed up growing food issure that all of a sudden goes from two hours to twenty four hours and does not give you what you earned for the 22 extra hour wait. My list of problems is short, but it still makes me wonder about a company who ignores their players. Life in this game is hard and very frustrating, but has potential. Sometimes people foget this games is about making money, so the creators designed it to make us want to spend. Lol,cheers.
I am on level 21...playing since early Jan. but i still have only 2 islands.
I have bred all of the 2 element dragons except for the opposites light and mystic....the Full Moon dragon..with the wolf body.
I have not been able to bread a rare dragon, or any dragon with more than 2 elements, so far, and I've been my breeding cave busy, nearly non stop.
I have implemented the guides and as many rare dragon options as possible... and i'm trying over and over.. as required.
Maybe today?!
I'd be very interested in any tips, especially with images... so they are user friendly.
OH?! And one of my dragons has 4 stars for breeding...that's 20% even though it only shows 2 stars...the 20% is listed next to the stars in the info box about the dragon.
So how many rare dragon stars/5% are possible?
How far can the dragons be evolved?
My highest dragon level currently is 15.. and now it wants a 2nd evolution? Surprise!
Mhana, the best tip I can give you for breeding a rare dragon is to mix as little elements as possible.
For instance; if you want a steam dragon you have the most chance of getting it by breeding the following dragons:
- Water dragon and Phoenix dragon.
This will also give you a chance to breed a Chinese dragon. There are very little other dragons which you can breed by having this combinations. If you want to breed a specific rare dragon, then take a good look at how many dragons there can come out by the elements that you're planning on breeding....
It's hard to explain but hopefully you'll get it. You should take a good look at the reply's of DanBR. He explained it very well (it's also on wikipedia).
If you want to get rare dragons or even a 4 element dragons, do this. First try to get one of your dragons at a 10% chance of rare dragon (Hybrid) and try to get the other one to 10-15% chance.Remember this if you breed a 3 element dragon with a hybrid or another 3 element dragon the usual breeding time will take more longer. That's what happened to me when I got My VOLCANO dragon but it took many tries because my perk were 10% and 5% and I level up my dragon until level 20.
Help! I have been emailing (6 emails) the people who created this game and I am getting no where. With regards to the last challenge for the Dairy Dragon, I did ALL the tasks and never received my dragon. I love this game and have sunk a lot of money into it and i'm very frustrated with the lack of communication from the website "gurus". There has to be someone that can help me get my Dairy Dragon. Please help me - I don't want to quit this game but I can't play a game that the developers ignore the people that provide them the ability to make a profit from.
Hello everyone I am a new player. I have breed almost 100 dragons but I got nothing. Can you help me to get any of the rare dragons like predatory, natural magic?
During the time where chances of breeding a special dragon was increased by four I bred bred FEROCIOUS dragon (0%) with MAGIC dragon (5%) and got VOLCANO dragon! !
same hassle here but worse , i have been playing for months now got all the breeding dragons to a 3 star perk i just can`t do any more and yes i am yet to breed 1 yes 1 single rare dragon i see people who have less levels than me and they have the dragons i`m trying to breed
Can anyone on here tell me if they have gotten a full moon dragon and how they did it? I have tried every combination of dragons I can think of. My Blackmagic dragon is a 20% dragon so ive been using that one the most but mixing it with light it only breads fairy dragons. I just realized that Twilight and Sun will either get me an Ash dragon or a Full Moon dragon, or give me one of the three elements.I just had this imagine of when Sarah, from The Labyrinth, thinks she's figured out the doors and then falls down the hole. I feel like i've got this and figured it out but there is a slim chance im correct.
I know it is extremely random and very hard to get BUT some dragons, like the rock dragon, are the only dragons that can be bread with that combination, especially if there is no other combination you can get. I have been playing this game for two years now and have only gotten 6 rare dragons with 3 essences and 1 4 essence rare dragon (Azur), not sure how I got him though.
